How Chongqing Actually Works (And Where You Should Stay)

The Most-Photographed City in China β€’ 60 Mentions Across the Corpus

Chongqing is the most-asked-about city after Beijing and Shanghai, and the most misunderstood. It is a vertical city stacked on mountains and rivers: your map says "10 minutes away" and the route takes you down 14 flights of stairs through a residential lobby. One local's thread titled "How Chongqing actually works and where you should stay" became the reference. Here is its substance, plus what trip reports agree on.

1. Accept That the City Is 3D

Streets stack on top of each other. "Floor 1" of one building can be "Floor 11" of its neighbor. Practical consequences:

  • Walking distances on maps are meaningless β€” always check the elevation change.
  • The monorail (Line 2 passing through a residential tower at Liziba) is not a gimmick; it is daily transit you will genuinely ride.
  • Taxi and Didi beats walking between viewpoints β€” distances are short but brutal on foot.

2. The Signature Experiences (All Cheap or Free)

  • The 3-RMB public ferry: from Chaotianmen dock across the river. The same skyline as a 150-RMB dinner cruise, for the price of a bottle of water.
  • Hongyadong at night: the stacked stilt-house complex that looks like a movie set. Go at dusk, then walk the Qiansimen Bridge for the reverse view.
  • Hotpot: the city's soul. Order the yuanyang (half-spicy, half-clear) pot if anyone at the table can't handle heat; ask for sesame oil with garlic as the cooling dip.
  • Nanshan / One Tree viewpoint: the classic panorama across the whole peninsula.

3. Where to Stay

Local advice converges on two zones: Jiefangbei (the walkable commercial heart, best for a first visit) and the Nanbin Road riverside (the skyline across the water from your window). Avoid anything described as "near the north station" for tourism purposes β€” it's a business district far from the river. Stay within 300m of a metro station; Line 1/2/6 and the monorail cover everything a visitor needs.

4. Rain, Heat, and the Spicy Stairmaster

Chongqing gets long rainy spells (locals wrote a whole thread about 60 days of drizzle) and fierce summer heat that earned it "furnace city" status. Mist actually flatters the mountain scenery β€” foggy-day plans that work: Ciqikou old town's covered lanes, the Three Gorges Museum, hotpot halls, and monorail rides. In July–August, do viewpoints after sunset and treat midday as indoor time. And yes: the city is one long staircase. Pack the comfortable shoes.
